What are Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)?

Sexually transmitted diseases, also known as STDs, are transmitted from one person to another through unsafe sex. A person can develop the disease if he or she comes close to another person who is infected with STD.

A proper diagnosis is the only solution to find whether a person has an STD. If you have had unsafe sex with someone through vaginal, anal, or oral sex, you should get tested to check whether you are infected or not.

What are the Symptoms of STDs?

Several common sexually transmitted diseases have few or no symptoms. Most of them may have the flu-like signs that may appear after years of exposure. Early diagnosis can help the patients avoid any serious complications.

Below are some common symptoms that may lead to STDs if you have had unsafe sex, or blood from an infected person.

  • Swelling or redness near the penis or vagina
  • Bumps, sores near penis, vagina, or mouth
  • Aches, pains, fever
  • Jaundice
  • Weight loss, loose stools, night sweats
  • Painful sexual intercourse
  • Itching near the penis or vagina

How are STDs Tested?

Generally, the sexually transmitted diseases are screened using different diagnostic procedures—though it depends on the symptoms as well. If your sexual habits are exposed to the infection, the doctor would recommend for the following types of test:

Blood tests: It is recommended to know the stage of syphilis.

Urine test: A urine sample is screened to diagnose some specific symptoms.

What Else Do You Need to Know?

There is no preparation for a full STD test panel, however; if you test positive for a STD and need medication, please inform the physician of medications you are allergic to.
