Antinuclear Antibodies

Defining Antinuclear Antibodies:

Antinuclear antibodies are formed by the immune system of an individual when the immune system cannot identify between own and foreign cells, and tissues. These can also be called as autoantibody or ANA. These affect own healthy cells and tissues and cause inflammation in organ, muscle, tissues, and joints. These antibodies attack the nuclear of the healthy cells, this is why these are known as antinuclear antibodies.

What is antinuclear antibodies test?

ANA Test helps in identifying the supposed autoimmune disorder or to find any other health problem which has similar indications and symptoms as ANA. Patients with another opposite immune disorder, namely systematic lupus erythematosus are generally positive with ANA Test.

When a doctor order for ANA test?

A doctor orders for ANA test when the whole body shows the indications of autoimmune disorder. Specifically, a doctor orders for this test when the body is showing changeable signs and symptoms over a period of time.

Those signs and symptoms are as follows:

  • Hair loss
  • Muscle pain
  • Damage to tissues and organs ( also includes kidney, heart, lungs, nervous system and blood vessels)
  • Itching and insensibility in the hands and feet
  • Skin sensitivity
  • Weakness
  • Arthritis
  • Low fever
  • Inflammation in various body parts

Can you have a positive ANA test result and still do not have autoimmune disorder?

The answer is positive. Some people do not have any autoimmune disorder still, they show positive results in the ANA test. Most of the people, aged above than 65, are suspected to grow antibodies nuclear more even without any autoimmune disorder. It is because the antinuclear antibodies production increases with the increasing age.
