What is a Calcium Blood Test?

A calcium blood test is aimed at diagnosing the level of calcium in your blood. It helps the doctors to check whether the level of calcium is low or high in your bloodstream. In both conditions, your health may lead to serious conditions unless you don’t get proper treatment. Often, the test is part of a routine health testing.

A calcium blood testing helps the doctors to detect diseases that can potentially affect your kidney, heart, bones, nerves, and other important organs.

Calcium is essential for keeping your bones healthy and enduring. In addition, it is also necessary to keep important organs like heart, nerves, kidney, etc. in good condition. Since calcium is very important to keep our body in a good health condition, its level in the bloodstream should neither exceed not drop from the optimal level.    

What happens if the level of calcium is high?

If the calcium level is higher than the optimal range in your blood, this condition is known as hypercalcemia. Below are some common symptoms that refer to the high level of calcium:

  • Excessive thirst

What if the level of calcium is low?

Having a low level of calcium in the bloodstream is known as hypocalcemia. Symptoms of hypocalcemia include the following conditions:

  • Pain in your abdomen
  • A scratchy sensation in your fingers
  • Irregular heartbeat

What happens in the course of calcium testing?

It is a simple diagnostic process that requires a blood sample to test the calcium level. There may be a little sore or you may experience a pinch where the sample is drawn.
